Surfing Life were positive Avoca could not, and would not be stopped at the Aussie Boardriders Battle. And in an act of ruthless self-promotion we declare we were right!

The guys and girl captained by Ace Buchan moved into the final looking a step above everyone else all event long. They were even deducted five-points in the final when Matt Wilko caught more waves than allotted limit.

A five-point deduction and Avoca still won! We have not seen a battle against all odds like this, since 1996. When Happy Gilmore overcame a four-stroke lead on the back nine to overtake Shooter McGavin on the 18th hole to claim his maiden Tour Championship.

Speaking of Gilmore’s who are of the happy variety. Steph Gilmore who came second with her beloved Snapper Rocks outfit, probably summed up the event the best.

“This is a great event for team culture and helps grow the camaraderie between all the members,” said a smiling Gilmore. “It was certainly nerve-racking to be put under that pressure to perform but it’s also the perfect practice for a World Tour event.”
