In case you missed it, the second ever WSL Pe’ahi Challenge went down in epic conditions on Saturday (Friday in Hawaii) with Billy Kemper taking his second victory and Paige Alms becoming the first ever women’s champion. You can read all about that here.

But the events that took place afterwards threaten to be the real headline grabber.

Hawaiian big wave master (along with 7 times SUP world champion) Kai Lenny decided to have a second bite at Pe’ahi, this time using tow assistance. The result? Some of the most progressive big wave surfing we’ve seen in a long time.

Kai proceeds to treat the 20-foot faces like they are waist-high grovellers, carving like a madman, hitting the lip on multiple occassions and even getting one of the deepest barrels we have ever seen at Pe’ahi.

“After the World Surf League#PeahiChallenge finished up yesterday I decided to go back out at Peahi for one last session,” Lenny wrote on his facebook page.
“The contrast between paddling and towing are so different but so epic in their own ways. I enjoy both equally!”

So did Kai just upstage the big show at their own game? We’ll let you be the judge…
