HAVE YOU HEARD? WADE GOODALL BROKE HIS LEG, HE MAY NEVER SURF AGAIN! THERE WAS ANOTHER SHARK ATTACK IN NORTHERN NEW SOUTH WALES, I MAY NEVER SURF AGAIN! GLOBAL WARMING IS KILLING OUR OCEANS, TERRORISTS WANNA KILL US, DRUGS KILL AND LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY…

 Everyone just needs to relax.

Everything is going to be all right.

Let’s just go surfing.

It seems that these days it’s hard to not be bombarded with bad news. Sharks are roaming the oceans and attacking people, and it’s not letting up. All around the world people are killing each other for the stupidest reasons. The earth is dying and we’re killing it, and our politicians don’t want to do anything about it.

In issue 328 of Surfing Life, officially the world’s most favouritest surfing magazine, we tackle some of the heavy issues, but we ain’t doing it to scare you; we ain’t no fear mongers. We want you to know that everything is going to be fine – all you have to do is go surfing and you’ll realise this.

In SL328 we sit down with Wade Goodall for a chat. Dude broke his leg three times! And different breaks, doing different things, on different bones! What a cavalcade of shithouse luck! But where lesser dawgs would give it up, Wade’s working hard to get back. Just last month he came on a trip with us to P-Pass, and he’s not far off blowing our minds again with his personal brand of hard and fast surfing. This is Wade Goodall’s creative resurrection, a tale that it’s never as bad as it seems and surfing always wins in the end.

Unless the sharks win. Every surfer in the world has heard about the Northern New South Wales shark problem. Shark situation. Shark issue. Sharks. Whatever you want to call it, something is going on ’round those parts and it’s terrifying. So we got Nick Carroll on the case, because we’re sick of the hysteria. And Nicko got to the bottom of it, spoke to the people involved, and while there’s no solution yet, it seems like there’s going to be, just so long as we keep calm, maintain a cool head, don’t overreact, and no matter what, never stop surfing. It’s scary, but it’s not scary enough to keep us out of the water.

Which is good, because in 328 we’ve got the best darn Summer Funboard Guide that you’re ever going to see. We took 12 of the best small-wave boards for a grovel, with Sheldon Simkus, James “Taipan” Wood, Harley Ingelby, so you can find the best little summer fatty for the small-wave months. Every quiver needs a groveller, and no guide is better for getting you on the right equipment than this hot little number.

There you have it, Surfing Life cutting through the doom and gloom and letting you know that everything will be a-OK. Grab a fun board, take a leaf out of Goodall’s book, don’t sweat the big sharks, and hit the peelers. The world is still a wonderful place, get in, get wet and forget about the crappy stuff.
