The myth, the legend, THE G-Land. Spotted through the window of a plane flight to Bali by American Bill Boyum, rumour spread of a perfect, long, isolated left-hander off the tip of Java through travelling-surfer-circles in the early 1970s. Bill’s brother, Mike, made some of the first voyages to the region and eventually set up the original surf camp, hosting legends of the sport such as Gerry Lopez, Peter McCabe, Jeff Hakman, among others. Set among Javanese National Park, Alas Purwo, Joyo’s Jungle Surf Camp is just that; constructed in the dense, tropical jungle on the south-east corner of mainland Java, just off the beach and directly in front of the section of reef known as Speedies. While it’s only an hour by speedboat across the Bali Strait, you’ll feel like you’ve arrived on another planet as the raw, natural surroundings envelop you and you settle into jungle life. An adventurous trip, but accessible to a variety of surf-traveller and their non-surfing partners and companions… and it’s a place that every surfer should visit, even just once.
