Stop #4
July 15 – 25 The Billabong Pro Jeffrey’s Bay South Africa by Jock Barnes
Intro
This one is rich in history as well, Occy’s early performances, Joel Parkinson’s rookie win and Neco Padaratz weird dance moves in celebration of the barrel. Jbay conjures all that is weird and wonderful and the best part about it is the town may have grown but the wave and that good old country feeling is just as it ever was.
The Wave
If you haven’t surfed Jbay book a ticket now! This place is a true surfer’s heaven and the wave is the crown jewel. Starting from bone yards at the top of super tubes you’ll see your wave approaching like a perfectly groomed ski slope waiting for you to tear it to pieces. This wave has it all tubes, power, a belt-able lip and sections for more radical stuff like airs. The only word that can adequately describe Jbay is perfect.
Equipment
Most the surfers will be riding their favorite short board or one size up (an inch or so) at JBay. It may look easy to ride but Jbay takes a little getting used to, though I have noticed a trend of most Jbay performer to opt for round tails with single double concave, averagely weight glass and mid to low rails.
Keep your eyes on
Kelly and Parko. They are the standouts but Mick and Taj would have a few words to offer to that and if Jordy Smith has learnt enough from 09 then it could be lights out for all of them.
My Pick
Kelly Slater his pure freakish ability is heightened at Jbay.
