Dayyoof having a laugh in the compeditors area. Yesterday’s O’Neill World Cup at Sunset Beach played out in some of the biggest competition waves seen in recent times. Amongst all the drama (Tim Reyes breaking a board duckdiving, Ian Walsh not being able to get in after his heat, Torrey Meister breaking two boards and having to ride his dad’s old 7’6, Sunny Garcia needing a 2.5 to keep his qualification dream alive with five minutes to go and copping a clean-up set on the head, countless broken boards) ASL couldn’t help but notice that our very own tour correspondent Dayyan Neve had registered a zero for his heat. Knowing that Dayyan revels in the big stuff, and is not injured, we figured something was amiss. Using the wonders of the web we tracked Dayyoof down for a little internerd chat… |

Dayyoof unleashing on his backhand in France. Pic Sharpy Last time we spoke I was heading off to Trestles for the Boost comp. So what happened? Well, Trestles was pretty cool, and the final (Taj Burrow vs Kelly Slater) was high performance surfing about as good as it gets. Taj got two waves that were amazing, the biggest and best waves of the final, and had Kelly comboed in no time. All of the Aussies were going mad claiming it and so ready to get on it with Taj that night. Then Kelly caught a small one and surfed it amazingly, even by his standards, and got out of the combo, but he still needed a big score. He took off on a wave with not much time left, and even though the thing was tiny his surfing was mental. He’s that good. No-one really knew if he’d get the score, but he can convince the judges, the fans, the commentators, anyone, and of course he got the score. It would have been tough for Taj, cos when you’re in the water you’re not really sure of what your opponent has done so you have to listen to your mates. The big argument was about whether the best waves surfed really well should beat smaller waves surfed even better, and obviously all the Aussies were telling Taj he should have won. He’s a pretty good sport and took it on the chin, but even Americans were coming up and telling him he should have won so it was pretty heavy. |

Bede getting some tube practice at home on North Straddie. Pic Andrew Shield It was really cool to arrive home to Stradbroke Island in Australia and find my family and friends had organised a party for me after winning in Brazil. It was a great buzz and drove home the good feeling around securing my third WCT contest win and moving to No. 2 in the ratings behind Kelly ahead of Hawaii.

The moment it became official.....On ya Kelly. Pic Sharpy From midnight last night until the start of Kelly and Eneko Acero's heat today at around midday it has pissed down. Rained like you wouldn't believe, with a few interludes of pea-sized hail, which made the event fun for all concerned. |
