Rip Curl is known for The Search, the Easter Pro at Bells Beach, wetsuits, and having World Champs Mick Fanning and Steph Gilmore on their team, so when they sent us these Newport shades we were curious to see if they stacked up against the quality of Rip Curl’s other gear.
It’s important to note when we road test sunglasses we don’t have a clue about how much they protect eyes from sun damage, there aren’t any optometrists on the ASL payroll. If on the box it says they’ve got base 6 polycarbonate lenses that have 100% UVA, UVB and UVC, we take their word for it. (UVA = Ultra Violet Radiation, UVB Medium wave UV light, Short wave UV light.)
What we do know is these would have to be the lightest sunnies ever, and it’s easy to forget you’re wearing them. This means that a) you don’t get red marks on your nose after cruising around in ‘em all day, and b) you might occasionally paddle out still wearing them, and feel stupid.
Another reason making these bad boys worth a look is the price. They’re only $99.95. Sure, that’s more coin that cheapies at the petrol station but compared to the price of some other surf brand sunnies is great value.
These are great shades that tick all the boxes; comfort, style and value.
