Nice woodie
The Carver website describes this board as “the classic street surfer that can take on any conditions you throw at it.” We’ve heard of all kinds of skateboards promising to improve your surfing or that feel like you’re riding a wave and we’ve been excited by the possibilities. Who wouldn’t want to improve their surfing or have the feeling of riding waves when it’s flat?
When we first laid eyes on the Carver, we were immediately stoked. It looks like a classic 70’s longboard, from the wooden deck to the pin stripes and old school logo. We knew we’d be rollin’ in style.
We jumped on and it felt a bit sketchy as it slides from side to side while pushing off due to the crazy pivoting front truck. It took some getting used to, just like when you’re riding a new surfboard, but after that initial weirdness it was a great ride.
The best part was finding a road with a bit of an incline and just pumping and carving the thing as long as possible. It didn’t feel exactly like surfing but then again it never promised to. What you can’t fault the Carver for is that it did exactly what it promised it would: ‘street surf’. You can pump and generate speed and also do some semi-cutback type turns.
One factor that may have stopped it from feeling more like surfing is that the pivot truck is only on the front, so the back of the board felt stiff. Whether or not the Carver improves your surfing is pretty hard to judge, but who cares, it’s heaps of fun and helped us roll down the road for a pie in style.
