Joel Parkinson has been runner-up on the ASP World Tour in 2002, 2004, 2009 and 2011. In the early noughties it was Billabong buddy Andy Irons who kept Parko's name off the World Championship silverwear. And after three early season wins in 2009 who could forget the ankle injury and Mick Fanning's late-season good form that put a halt to what looked like a sure thing. But throughout 2011 when talk moved away from the Kelly Slater juggernaut, Adriano de Souza and Owen Wright were top of the list, yet with a strong finish to the end of the season, it was Parko who finished closest to the King - almost a full 8000 points ahead of third-placed Owen Wright.
Take a look at the 2011 ups and downs for Parko. He's been so close four times now - let's hope he can take the title in 2012.
