Day Two – La Graviere, Topless.

Round two was completed today in a slightly smaller, slightly less enthralling Le Penon. After three 14 hour circuits of languishing in the ozone-less sun, I was more than pleased to hear the pitter-patter of precipitation on the tin roof in the wee hours of morning. Sleep prevailed the alarm, and I closed my eyes with a contentedness that the contest would, in fact, not be running. Then I woke up, and the webcast proved my inkling wrong. Being that there were only a few heats left in surf that looked to be, how you say, eh, more my size, I opted to forgo the contest and head to La Graviere. The shorebreak looked fun. And it was, for about 45 minutes, until it’d had about enough and dumped me on my head [if a wave had a middle finger, it would have been in the air]. I felt so used.

Lee Ann Curren* was also having a frolic, and I thought I’d take the opportunity to get to know the daughter of living legend, Tom. Back in 2011 she and Brazilian surfer Andre Silva started a project, Titan Kids, that portrayed the life of favela living in certain areas of Brazil. I’ve always admired her for becoming so much a part of an entity so alien to the vivacity of a young, endowed French woman. We walk the same direction into town and speak of the incoming rain clouds [standard], the day ahead [she is moving apartments], her music [a band called Betty and the Shark; if you’re in Hossegor get down to La Central tomorrow night to watch the lovely lass hit the bass], and her time in the favela of Titan. As we stroll barefoot down the road [romantic], John John waves us over from a nearby driveway. He’s just won his heat against our luxuriously locked Wilko, and is of course pleased. From the way the two talents interact it’s clear the boys have a sense of respect for Lee Ann*. I do too. Back at Le Penon, I arrive just in time to catch the last heat of the day. Gabriel Medina and Travis Logie are in the water. Five minutes later Medina, who said he was focusing on airs because of the meager wave size, scored the first 10-point ride of the contest on the grounds of a backhand full rotation aerial. And the crowd went wild…
