While all eyes are on Kelly Slater/WSL’s Surf Ranch in California, down in the South there is another artificial wave about to become open to the public: the NLand Surf Park in Austin, Texas.

Despite the opening of the surf park being delayed due some bizarre County rule wanting the lagoon to be regulated like a public pool, the company invited the New York Times out to document a recent test session.

While the NLand Surf Park is made with the same technology as the Wavegarden in Wales, the wave seems to be an improvement on its UK counterpart. Or maybe we just had low expectations. Either way, it still does not match the dream-like barrels of Kelly’s wave pool, but it is definitely a step in the right direction.

Could we be expecting similar, or even better, when the proposed Wavegarden technology pools open in Australia?
