Bennetts jags an OTW gem. Pic Jones/Stryker.
I wasn't planning on going to Hawaii this year until I checked my email a couple weeks back. One from eBay, one from my mate JS and one from Nutty (Reef Global Team Manager, Heath Walker). Nutty, well I haven't heard from him in a while, let's see what he has to say:

"Bennetts, you want to come stay with us in Hawaii? The catch is that we have two parties mate and need you to throw down some jams... One is on the Saturday 13th at Haliewa Joes and the second is in town on the 21st, it's a Pool party at the Marriot Waikiki."  Are you kidding me, what do you think I said?

After a week of running around booking flights and trying to organise boards, I was checked in and waiting in Sydney International Airport, next stop, Honolulu.

I grabbed a lift from the airport with Lincoln Taylor and Dion Atkinson for the one hour journey across to the North Shore, I couldn't believe the joint I was gonna be staying at. The Haleiwa Pro was being run by Reef and they conveniently had this massive six bedroom mansion on the beach, located a few hundred meters from Waimea Bay. This is where I was staying for the next two weeks. I was spewin!

The first few days were pretty radical. We pretty much just got on the piss every night and surfed fun waves all day. Every night, I was hoping for a night off but the Miss Reef girls would rock into our joint and start the party off again.

Day two and the World Miss Reef contest was being held at Haliewa Beach Park. 11 of the hottest girls I've ever seen paraded the cat walk shaking booty for a chance to win US$10,000. I was up top, with the best view, DJing for the event. Panamanian beauty Betzi took out the event and pocketed the coin all for having an amazing bum.

After the event, the whole site moved over to Haliewa Joes where the after party was about to kick off. Once again, I was DJing and people were going mad! The Miss Reef's were front and centre on the dance floor and were the centre of attention. The boys were circling taking photos and busting their best dance moves to see if they could get the girls attention. They all wanted a piece of the action.

Not only were the parties pumping over here on the North Shore, the waves were equally as good, if not better. I had three smallish days out the front of our house and then on Saturday in a space of four hours it went from four foot to 10-12 foot and Pipe was as good as it gets.

It was so surreal just sitting on the beach when I came in. Just watching these 10 foot second reefers rolling through. The beach was packed with spectators from OTW all the way down to Pupukea Beachpark, almost like a stadium. The atmosphere was amazing and every wave that came through was quickly followed up with a massive roar from the crowd. It was pretty mental. Thiago Camaro scored the wave of the day with a crazy 10 footer at pipe that he just pulled up under the lip and stood in the thing. You could have easily driven a bus through and it's now in contention for the Wave of The Winter Contest that Hurley and Nike 6.0 are running on Surfline.

This was the first proper Pipe swell of the year so of course, with the waves, came the crowds. I spent a good hour and half out there and managed to get one at backdoor. I cut my losses short and came back to the beach where Dean Morrison and paul Fisher were kicking back with the Miss Reef girls. The crowds this year seem to be pretty mellow which for a young Aussie, is pretty good. Don't get me wrong, it's been crowded in the lineup but everyone seems to be having a hell time just being out there.

The beach seemed to be a better option and Dingo fetched our crew a bunch of Bud Lights and we headed back to the house where the beers were flowing. This was the Miss Reef girls' last night so we had to send them off in style. Our house was fitted with surround sound speakers so the whole house was jumping. The Bud Lights turned into Seven Tiki Rums which then turned into a mixture of cocktails and soon enough, pants were off, g-strings were on and the hot tub was bubbling! Rob Machado then busted out his guitar and we were lucky enough to get a good jam session from him.

The North Shore is one of those places that is so radical with its swell forecasts. It sits in the middle of nowhere so the swells that hit the island come from so far away and come out of such deep water.

As quickly as the swell arrived, it disappeared overnight and we woke up to fun three to four foot waves and decided to hit Rockies mid morning. Loving island life.
