Brazil is on the opposite side of the world so staying awake for the webcast is pretty hard. It also doesn’t help that the Hang Loose Pro has been moved from summer to winter, meaning the few female spectators on the beach are wearing much more clothing than we’re use to.

Another factor that’s working against staying awake for the webcast is the commentary. It’s awful. There’s only one commentator in the booth, he never has anything interesting to say and with long pauses between sets, there’s often silence for long pauses. Normally this would be an issue, but in this case it’s a minor relief. This event is furthering the argument that the ASP needs their own, independent commentary team covering all of the events.

Kelly Slater won his Round Two heat against Brazilian wildcard Bernardo Miranda, but only just snuck through riding his self shaped “wizard sleeve” board. In four to five foot bumpy conditions Slater looked out of sync and fell a couple of times when he normally wouldn’t, and only managed to win 13.04 to 11.16.

“I’ve been feeling a bit burned out on competition and wasn’t planning on coming to Brazil or Jeffreys Bay,” Slater said. “I was planning on spending a bit of time with my family, but I spoke with Renato (Hickel) and he told me that all the fans in Brazil were looking forward to it, so I decided to come and make the journey down here.”

Jordy Smith on the other hand looked sharp, was reading the waves a lot better and seemed to link his turns together effortlessly.

“It’s still pretty tough out there and it’s difficult to find a spot to line up,” Smith said. “There are some pretty good waves coming through the bowl though and if you can get on them, you can open up a bit. I just got lucky with my wave selection and was able to put up a couple of scores.”

Dane Reynolds' nightmare run this season continues after he lost to Tiago Pires in a low scoring heat. It's Dane's third straight 33rd and although not even half way through the season he'll have to start posting some big results soon to re-qualify for next year's Dream Tour.
