Jay Davies missed most of Julian Wilson’s new flick at its US Open premiere, but claims the last two sections are “bullshit”. Five out of five stars.
ASL spoke to Jay in the final stages of a two-month US bender that’s been punctuated with occasional surfing. In between packing his bags for Europe and avoiding a Tequila wielding Jordy Smith, Davies took five to give us the lowdown on the US Open, the last two sections of Julian Wilson’s new movie, Scratching The Surface, and his upcoming movements.
ASL: Jay, what’s happening?
Jay: Ahhh, not a lot mate. I’m just here in the Rusty house trying to get packed for Europe. I’m heading off tomorrow and need to get all my shit organized. It’s a madhouse.
How so?
Jordy Smith and Damien Fahrenfort are still here celebrating Jordy’s second place at the US Open. They’re pounding tequila and I’m trying to avoid getting sucked in. They sure are being persistent. I’m hiding from them right now. Jordy is a maniac.
How has the summer been?
The Rusty house in Newport has been mental for the last few weeks, especially with the US Open. I’ve still managed to do a lot of surfing, but it’s been balanced out with a lot of drinking as well; some very hazy days indeed. I couldn’t really give you a highlight. It’s all been super raucous.
You went to Julian Wilson’s premier last night yeah?
Yeah I was there. I got there late though and only caught the last two sections. They were bullshit though. Everyone said the sections before were bullshit too. From what I saw he’s just gone on trips with the guys who are at the top of their game and scored mental waves. I saw Taj Burrow, Dane Reynolds and Mick Fanning and they were all flaring. Plus, all the high tech camera gear makes it a pretty epic movie.

You were in Japan when Julian pulled the Sushi Roll on the ASL Hot 100 in 2007. Was that a sign of things to come?
Jeez, that trip was ages ago, but now that you mention it, I guess so. He was a crazy surfer then and he’s really come a long way. He’s gotten that much better and bulked up a bit. He’s a really well rounded surfer. He’ll qualify for sure.
F’sure. So what’s on the horizon for you?
Off to Europe to slog it out on the QS and then Indo for an Electric shoot.
Tough gig…
Yep I’m loving life right now. It doesn’t get much better.
Aight mate, have fun out there. Watch out for those sneaky Saffas, they’ll git ya.
Yew.
Indeed.
