Josh Kerr tube hunting at Stradbroke yesterday. Pic Shield.
The third “Summer Round” of Taylor Steele’s Innersection project is about to begin, and we’ve got the inside scoop on which sections to watch for. Log onto Innersection.tv on July 8th to vote for your favorite. First week ratings (1-10) cut the field down to Top 10. Second week, you seed your Top 10 into order to award points to the sections.
The top five sections earn a section in Steele next high-performance surf movie (due this December) and the best section from that wins a cool US$100,000. And you decide who gets it.
Still time for last minute entries, but here’s the lineup so far…
The Aussies…
JOSH KERR: Since disappearing from tour, Kerrzy’s been reappearing everywhere. Surfing like a maniac. Quitting comps was the best thing ever for this freesurf legend out to re-establish his real rep as one of the world’s best aerialists. This is a great place to start.
QUOTE: “I’ve watched him a lot lately and, on the right waves, Josh Kerr might be the best surfer in the world right now.” —Lee Wilson, Indonesian surfing champion
OZZIE WRONG: Ukulele punk and a unicorn from Planet Zorb, finally some creativity. Let’s hope he doesn’t get punished for it like Dion did.
QUOTE: “It's funny watching surfers try to act.” —Filmmaker Jimmy Kinnaird made One Month on the Moon
DEAN MORRISON: Shagga and Matty Gye have been filming heaps for Dingo’s profile film, so when Dean told ‘em he wanted to make waves on Innersection, it was on.
QUOTE: “This is what he lives for and he isn't scared of anything. Dean is a competitive mofo at heart and he was raised by a world champ.” —Shagga [and Gye] made 3 Degrees and currently produce the TV series “A Surfer’s Paradise”
ANTHONY WALSH: The free-surfing tube hunter, Walshy has pieced together some clips of impressive pits including some of his own GoPro footage.
QUOTE: " All the sections you see are just air after air. Ryan Kenny (Filmer and Editor) and I just tried to make this section different to everyone elses hope it stands out and hope people like it! The song from Art Vs. Science we used is sick and differen't and stoked they let us use the song. Please vote for me guys!!!!!!" - Walshy. Ryan's filming and editing are top notch, he worked for ASL making our DVDs for two years.
Others Aussies include Ry Craike, going right.
Da Hawaiians…
JOHN JOHN FLORENCE: Little Two-Johns isn’t so little anymore. Ready to earn that “next big thing” reputation? We’ll see.
QUOTE: “I think he could find a way to spend $100k at the Apple store.” —Reagan Ritchie made Nathan Fletcher’s Lavase Los Manos
Clay Marzo's signature fin ditch.
CLAY MARZO: Maui’s surfing savant may just be the most freakishly talented surfer of this round. And since he’s finished his profile movie, his clips were free to roam. Look out.
QUOTE: “We couldn't decide which clips to narrow it down to in such a small amount of time. It was very challenging deciding what to take out.” —Adam Klevin has filmed for Younguns 3, Tomorrow and Today, Just Add Water, and Still Filthy.
DANIEL JONES: His older brother Mikala scored big in the first round. Will DJ follow suit? He’s definitely scored the waves this year, but Daniel was a little nervous about standing up to the Internet haters and the cruel fate of his good friend Flynn Novak.
QUOTE: “Haters love the Internet, but I’m not gonna worry about it. I'll admit some of the comments are entertaining when your not involved.” —Daniel worked with up-coming filmmaker Jeremy Rumas and Balinese filmer Komang Widarma.
Other Hawaiians include Granger Larson, Torrey Meister, , and Jalian Johnston…Heavy, bra. Hawaii really showed up this round.
Pat G mid rodeo at the SriLankan Airlines Pro last year.
The Californians…
PAT GUDAUSKAS: Theme? Check. Rodeos? Check. Mavericks? Check. P-Gudang worked hard on this, and I’d be shocked if it didn’t make Top 5.
QUOTE: “This section is from all over. Our goal was to make it diverse and not just do the air after air thing that’s been going down.” —Chris Steblay is production manager for the Vans Triple Crown
DILLON PERILLO: We hear Malibu pretty boy Perillo moved to Newport to toughen up for this section.
QUOTE: “More energy, faster cuts, and my style of music. We actually made a cut for round two which was mental but we had some last minute trips come up and we decided to wait and it paid off. Stoked.” —Josh Landan just released Timmy Curran’s The Union Express.
NATE YEOMANS: Repeat offender and WTer Yeomans is back with more whacky hunting shenanigans and an even tighter edit from San Clemente filmmaker Matt Wybenga.
QUOTE: “Here we go again!” — Matt Wybenga made Pico to Basilone
OTHER Californians include: Dane Zuan (cool urban edit) and Patrick Giles (longboarder & sushi chef).

Maxime Huscenot during his impressive run to claim the World Junior Championship.
International…
MAXIME HUSCENOT: Yeah, I hadn’t really heard of Maxime either, but when I looked him up I found out this Reunion Island hotshot had been winning Pro Juniors lately. Filmmaking duo Erwan Abdourakako and Ian Mourier do a great job of developing a theme.
QUOTE: “He is a smart guy and a very good competitor. He has a nice style and always tries to improve his surfing.” —Erwan and Ian also made a kitesurfing movie.
MARLON GERBER: I’m personally surprised we haven’t seen more re-entries. I mean, why not? Bashed egos, I suppose. Balinese style-master Marlon Gerber is back with new footage, new song, and a new edit. He was sooo close the first round, and this round his section is much improved.
QUOTE: “I’m just excited to see what people think of it. We replaced almost every wave from the first round with a better one. Marlon’s got such amazing style.” —Logan edited Taylor Steele’s Castles in the Sky.
JONATHON GONZALEZ: Another repeat customer, Canary Islander Jonathon Gonzales had a really nice section in the second round and has re-worked his piece to be even stronger. These guys learned, and improved. Forget what you don’t know and watch this section closely.
“Jonathon’s used to fighting on the WQS around the world. This is no different to him.” —Juan Hernández Johansson made Volcom VQS Santander
Other international surfers include…Mattia Di Bitonto (Bali), Brendon Gibbens (South Africa), Michelangelo Bernardoni (Brazil), and Christophe Allary (Reunion Island).
