Creed's D'Bah boardslide. Pic Calderon/Surfing Queensland.
WA wonder kid Creed McTaggart took out the blue ribbon U16 boys division of Occy's Grom Comp today in rampy three foot runners at D'Bah. The true blue Aussie who was born on Australia Day is building up an impressive competitive resume with wins and final appearances at grom comps all over the country. Creed has been doing the great western state proud, so we called him for a chat.
Hey Creed, we heard ya been ripping?
Really? Who’s been talking about me behind my back? I’ve only been surfing every now and then.
How was the Rip Curl International Grom Search at Bells?
I was cruising. It was my first time to Bells and I was just stoked to be in the final with Gabriel Medina and Kolohe Andino. Those guys rip. The waves were really bad so we had to make do with what we had. I’ve still got a long way to go but it was a really good experience.
Tell us about the waves you get at home?
Ah, in Margaret River we get all sorts, it’s always different. It’s been a good autumn in the South West. One day you’re punting on small beachies, next thing you know you’re pulling into massive slabs. All the waves are fun, you just need to know how to enjoy them. About two years ago I found my feet at The Box and I love surfing there. It’s a really tricky wave and when it’s big you have to psyche up to go out there. When you finally do, and you’re parked under the lip of a big barrel it’s sick. Of course you can hit the bottom and snap boards, but it’s worth it.
What’s it like growing up in Margarets?
I reckon it’s gotta be one of the best places to be if you’re a surfer. There’s a really small, supportive scene and everyone knows each other. Of course all the kids are stoked on Taj Burrow, and it’s sick to see Yadin Nicol and Jay Davies in the water too. Those guys are really helping lift the level...
