The world’s best aerialists took to Bondi yesterday in the Boost Mobile SurfSho. The specialty event is worth exactly no World Tour ratings points but with twenty five grand on the line, and a coupla thousand mad punters on the beach, there was more than enough incentive for the fly guys.
Owen Wright took out the event for the second time, taking down the likes of Taj Burrow, Kelly Slater, Josh Kerr and Jordy Smith. “I'm ecstatic!” roared the Big O after the final. “Where's the thesaurus to describe how I feel? It was a great final, great atmosphere, and a great crowd. I'm buzzing! It's been a big three days. I'm stoked to be at Bondi and walking away with the Boost Mobile SurfSho trophy and this cheque!”
Another trophy and novelty cheque for the pile. Pic ASP/Robertson This was the first professional surfing event at Bondi in over 20 years and Bondi actually threw down a few ramps for the boys to do their thing. If you watched the webcast you would have seen the throw-away to landed air ratio was about 10:1, but the boys put on a good show. Special mention to Mick Fanning, who after coming close to landing a couple of supermans tried one while still mid-face on the wave, what most would call a handstand.
On ya Owen, now let’s see you win one with some World Tour points up for grabs. Pic bluesnapper.com.au
Summer time in Australia … and where else would the world’s top surfers rather be than on the Gold Coast?
The Breaka Burleigh Pro begins tomorrow and the lineup is stacked.
