Taj Burrow’s Burleigh Breaka Boost Bonanza

Today Taj stomped his innovative authority amongst a bunch of new-school freaks in what’s set to be an advanced era in competitive surfing. Rock Break’s been copping a flurry of traditional power based moves over recent days with big cracks and carves. But today if you didn’t go high, then you may as well have gone home. Forget the gangly JC Epidemic BMX crew busting airs on the halfpipe – the surfers were the ones going big in the air today.

I’d be lying if I said Burleigh was pumping, but there’s no doubt she was throwing up perfect sections for contestants to generate speed for antics above the coping. Even Taj was surprised with the sheer amount and level of precision, “I was blown away by how many good airs I saw”, Taj admitted after the final. Kerrzy was responsible for upping the anti with a clean, monstrous air-reverse and seamless ally-oop. The kind you wouldn’t usually see executed by a surfer sporting a competition jersey. And they were as easy as you like on his stumpy little number.

Surfers changed either their approach or equipment today to deal with the conditions. Not even savvy surf reporters nailed the forecast. They’d blown the swell size and direction. Torrential rain hampered the earlier heats. Just like that though blue sky appeared and eager spectators gathered for their slice of history. And this one will be etched into the books for sure.
