It was the best board in the Test I’d surfed up to that point. Everyone seemed to like it. I think it’s the fact that it’s nice and wide and still short. The round pin you’d think would be for bigger waves, but it’s really loose and responsive and bites in good.

Tai

Real pivoty, super alive and responsive. It’s like Rex has made a step-up shape into a miniboard. I went back to my shaper that afternoon and said, “I’ve got this board from the Board Test and I want you to copy it!” Joking. But….

Tyler

Liked it! First look I thought that because the tail was so pulled in it might have a weird section in the middle where it didn’t quite fit. But it’s pulled in really nicely and it all flows. Thickness is under your chest, which I like. Great speed, great projection, sick!

REX’s call: “One of my team riders, Russ Moloney, came in with a vision of what he wanted. So we just sat down and designed it all off the computer. We squashed down our standard NR2 template, which is my most popular regular shortboard, put a bit more thickness in the tail, kept the guts of the rocker from a 6’0” with the nose and tail chopped off, and made it an area pin so you’d get a lot of traction on it. First one he was like ‘That’s the best board I’ve ever ridden’. A lot of guys have ordered them and the feedback has been great; I thought it’d probably go all right in Bali. It’s OK to design like that off the machine, but you’ve gotta know what you’re after. You can use it to make a board look good, but there’s more to a board than looking good. There’s function as well as form.”

Design:

Flat to single concave to flat exit behind fin, low nose entry, continuous curve outline.

Made with:

South Coast megalite PU centre stringer blank, Accushaper machine cut, hand finished; 4x4x4oz S and E Cloth glass, Dion catalysed polyester resin.
