The unique carbon fibre layup off bottom and deck; lightness; plenty of foam; Adam planned to take possession of it post-Test.
Any surfer around 70-75 kilos, intermediate to skilled, in 1-4’ beachies and reefs.
None.
They call it the Fat Cat and you can see why ’cause it’s a fat board. It’s got this striking appearance with the carbon stripes bending out like a Hurley logo. It goes in a very fun manner. In smaller not so punchy waves it’s really fast and easy to turn and it’s really good to get into the air – it’s super light and as soon as it gets its nose into the wind and catches there, it goes high! Maybe they should call it the Kite Board.
It’s crazy, that little thing. It’s epoxy and it’s got this carbon that I think is supposed to load up the flex and squirt you into each turn. I’ve never been one who’s all for the epoxy thing. Often when I’ve seen someone ride one it’s seemed corky and chattery, but this felt real whippy and tight-arc – really suited to small beachies.
I needed bigger fins for it. But there’s so much potential in this board – how fast it goes and how much pop you can get out of the lip. I thought it did nice turns as well on the rail and in transitions. The lightness meant it felt heaps skatey, which I think is why I wanted bigger fins. But... fun!

DAN'S CALL: “Most of my guys have been going short and chunky; even team guys who wouldn’t go away from the standard shortboard are riding nothing else. It feels like a cross between '80s volume and modern outlines and rockers. They kind of seem to fit a bit better, not just normal-wave quality, but even better waves in Indo; maybe guys there are changing the tail to a round pin. The basic idea of the carbon wrap is to stop the board twisting during turns, while keeping the tail free to flex – without any weak points being present. It’s got the six ounce glass bottom and three-layer deck because the foam’s lightness allows us to strengthen the glass layers right up.”
Moderate single concave to flat behind fin, compressed shortboard outline, carbon wrap anti-twist built in.
Core Fusion EPS stringerless blank, machine cut, hand finished; 6oz (bottom) and 4x4x4oz (deck) glass, hand-laid carbon strip wrap, CET epoxy resins.
Futures system, Pancho Sullivan and AM2 Techflex sets.
