Classic round pin outline had the crew babbling; high mid-rail; part of a three-board cache that got stuck in baggage hell and arrived three days into testing.
Quick-minded, skilful surfer 65-70 kilos, in longer, clean, fun waves to five feet.
Minor deck denting.
It’s a super-refined board – there’s not much foam in the board at all, and just from watching people surfing it, I thought it looked like it didn’t want to surf too tight in the pocket, it wanted to draw turns a bit more. So I chose a few waves where you could do some more open-face type carves and it felt like it liked that a lot better, just doing the longer arcs. Once I’d surfed it like that for a while and got it settled down, I gave it that chance to do some things. I remember doing that snap (in the sequence) and hearing everyone cheer because they knew I’d got the shot!
It looked REALLY good when picking it up. It was a little bit thick though and it went a little different to what I thought. What I did like about it was when you had a punchier down-the-line wave with more speed, that sort of wave let it open up and was what it needed.

PETE’S CALL:: “The Hot Knife’s basically a performance design for when the waves are walled up and you want to carve and flow. It grows from the pintail outlines I was doing for Stuart Cadden years ago when he wanted Indo quivers, and Simon Bergin’s always ridden 'em. These are guys who like something more fluid than the snappy movement of a square or squash. Kelly’s had a huge influence (through his round pin comp boards), but there’s a lot of other guys too who’ve been riding them for a long time. You’ve gotta say the Internet and the instant influence of designs these days has really changed things for shapers; a board is under someone’s feet somewhere and instantly everyone knows about it. People are becoming more informed – although I’m not sure if they always understand what they’re reading!”
