A lot of my friends ride DHDs; this one was for Noah who I surf with a lot and he surfs amazing so it was good to get on one of his boards. It was a little bit small for me, but first wave it went great straight up. The wave was a little runner and I went down the line, did a little air and it just popped really nicely off the lip. Really clean. It was a good first impression. First waves like that can give you the confidence to get the best out of a board.

I’m not really a squaretail kid, mostly I feel like they stick in bottom turns, but I liked this one. It wasn’t super thick up front, instead it was foiled back and had all the thickness under the chest, which is probably why I liked it. Felt like a board that could be scaled down. I could imagine it as a 5’7”. Just very straightforward, quick to turn and uncatchy, good stuff.

mikey

Ty was riding it first and it looked like it was going really well for her. My first wave on it was a right-hander and it really bottom-turned hard, letting me go straight up into the lip. You can tell a lot about a board by how it does the simple things and this one did them all easily.

DARREN’S CALL: “Over the years I’ve had team riders liking more than one of the other models, the D1, the D2, the Mick model, and I’ve had a lot of people riding Fishes as well, trying to get something for small surf. So I think I just decided to grab what was good for everyone out of each. I got Mick’s nose rocker, which is quite low entry, and part of a fishtail rocker, this and that and put them together. That’s why it’s called a Puzzle Piece. Really I just wanted to wean people off riding Fishes. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the US and we have such perfect waves here comparatively – this is drawn a bit more off what they ride. Very beachbreaky with real 50/50 rails for forgiveness.”
